Description

I recorded this data during the stormy but clear night of 28 March 2023. Despite the strong wind gusts, the galaxy body came out pretty clear.

NGC4490

NGC 4490, also known as the Cocoon Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It lies at a distance of 25 million light years from Earth. It interacts with its smaller companion NGC 4485 and as a result is a starburst galaxy. NGC 4490 and NGC 4485 are collectively known in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 269.

Both galaxies are connected with each other through a stream of material about 25 000 light-years long. The stream is made up of bright knots and huge pockets of gassy regions, as well as enormous regions of star formation in which young, massive, blue stars are born.
Having already made their closest approach, NGC 4485 and NGC 4490 are now moving away from each other.

In the background there are many far away galaxies. For instance PCG2184099 lies at a Hubble distance of 2.24 Billion light years.
